Distribution
Retail Center

Teachers’ resources are stretched to the limit and many have to purchase basic materials, including pencils, paper and pens, out of their own funds.  At the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Space 2005 Conference in Long Beach, SGEEI staff spotted teachers carrying bags of goods out to their cars.  They had rummaged through trash cans pulling out pens, pencils, calculators and notepads that the exhibitors had thrown away.  This happens all the time in San Diego, a mecca for science and technology conventions and conferences, big and small.  These events typically have exhibit areas where vendors display products and give away items, many of which are of great value to teachers.  What they don’t use they throw away.  This also happens in government and commercial offices whenever an annual marketing campaign ends, companies merge, change their names or decide to leave behind materials when they move.

Our solution?  STTRC volunteers collect, sort, shelve and display these teacher treasures for pick up after school and Saturdays.  The retail center also displays the donated resource materials obtained from conventions, companies and government agencies.
